Never been shy, always been Chi
"Designers that go for the power suit or the big shoulders seem to me less successful than those trying to modernize the idea of today's women." - Anna Wintour, Editor and Chief of Vogue. This quote from Vogue's YouTube video, "Best Moments of Milan Fashion Week" really resinated with me. Truly think about it. We are stuck in the age of instant gratification, social media and dating apps, a world where we constantly challenge time and appear to win. We continue to take the easy way out--expediency over substance. But, recently with the #MeToo revolution, an unqualified public figure as our President, and America's youth taking a stand, we are starting to understand that not everything is instantaneous. As a diverse, multi-cultural planet, advancement is necessary in creating a place where women, the LBGT community and diverse cultures can unite and be heard. Where better to support these movements than in the fashion industry. Runways are an untouched canvas, pure, untainted by the outside world. You can't riot, stop or interfere with the political or social campaigns that are happening on the runways. Many designers have taken their opportunity to make a statement this season, such as Dior giving an ode to the Paris student protests of 1968 or Gucci breaking down the binary gender roles. Self-regeneration is at its strongest, “We exist to reproduce ourselves, but we have moved on. We are in a post-human era, for sure; it is under way.” - (Vogue by Sarah Mower, Alessandro Michele creative of Gucci) Not only is the fashion industry tackling the controversial issues of feminism and gender, but designers are focusing on much more than just that. Fashion is the ideal platform to speak out. Social Media can be a tricky thing, but if we use it for good by informing, rather than harassing, we, yes we, can make a difference. Sorry for the slight rant, but that's why I love fashion, not for the glitz and glam, but the way it can be used to tell a story.
So let's redefine what it means to be a women today. Let us embrace our sexuality, flaunt our masculinity, advertise our femininity, and strut our individuality. Fashion is now all about freedom, movement and imperfection, allowing women or men to embrace their diversity. Runways are becoming more democratic in their casting, locations and silhouettes. It is encouraged to redefine your version of what beauty is and it's about damn time.
